'I'd love to form a band,' says Dominique Cerejo

  - Soumita Sengupta
Dominique's first memories are about music
Although Farhan Akhtar was the star attraction of the musical hit Rock On!! with six songs to his credit, the romantic number 'Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein' still managed to rock the charts. Sung in a sensually soothing voice by Dominique Cerejo, the track made the hitherto unknown singer a singing sensation overnight.

Dominique admits that post Rock On!!, even rank strangers have been complimenting her work. In an interview, she tells us why she was destined to be a singer, her first victory as a crooner, her desire to form a band and her next release, Billu Barber.

When, and how, did you take up singing?
My first memories are related to music. There was no other choice for me. I used to dream about music as a child and I knew that I would grow up to be a singer. I feel blessed that my one of my wishes have been fulfilled.

Any memorable moments from your childhood regarding singing?
It’s about my first performance. I must have been seven or eight when I participated in a singing competition held by my church. Not having really planned it, I just went and sang for a lark. After my performance, my mom told me that I shouldn’t be upset if I didn’t win. Even as she was saying that, I was announced as the winner! My mom couldn’t believe it.

Did you train to become a singer?
Although I didn’t train to start with, I later went for singing classes to be more confident and learn more about the technique of singing. Even though some people are born singers, they still have to take lessons to perfect the art. Riyaaz is also very important.
