What to expect at Grammy 2010
  - HRM
Taylor Swift has eight nominations
This year’s nominee list was very predictable. Everyone expected Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell and Lady Gaga to receive a handful of nominations.

However, it’s difficult to predict the winner, since they come from different categories – ranging from country to R&B. But this isn’t the only reason you should watch it.

Another wild Gaga performance

With her whacky costumes onstage and offstage, it’s easy to assume that Lady Gaga isn’t going to disappoint us at the Grammy’s by going demure. The show girl will probably outdo her blood-spilling incident which she pulled off at a US concert in 2009. From solar system inspired outfits to crazy performances, we are not sure what Lady Gaga is going to perform but we are pretty sure it’s going to be one hell of a show.

The Michael Jackson tribute
The Michael Jackson tribute promises to be the highlight of this year’s ceremony. Apart from a 3-D movie that combines clips from the King of Pop’s videos and the This Is It movie, there will also be performances from Usher, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Smokey Robinson.

The prestigious Best Album Award

Of the five nominees – Dave Matthews Band, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and Beyonce – only the first name seems like an unlikely winner. But the Grammy committee is highly capable of pulling off surprises, too. However, we still think it will go to either country teen Taylor or the saucy Beyonce.

Will the Canadians do well?
Not often are the Canadians well represented at the Grammys. This time, they have got plenty of nods, and in several categories. Neil Young is nominated for two awards, including Best Solo Rock Performance, Drake has two nominations, one for Best Rap Album, Nickelback for Best Hard Rock performance. Leonard Cohen will also be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

A R Rahman’s first nomination

The double Oscar winner from last year is up for yet another international award, this time for a song from Couples Retreat. And given the West’s appreciation for his music, it’s quite likely that he will win. The other contenders – Paramore, Bruce Springsteen and Karen O – have an equal chance of winning, but our vote goes to Rahman. And it isn’t patriotism.

Whether Taylor will beat Beyonce

To pop aficionados, this is what matters most. Beyonce, with 10, leads Taylor by two nominations, but pop commentators predict that Taylor will emerge winner. And this is possible, considering the fact that Taylor faces less competition from other country and pop artists, as compared with the ones Beyonce is nominated in.

Will Kanye West behave himself?
He might, but nothing is black and white with Kanye, now is it? Surely Kanye will be more than a little ticked off about not being nominated in any of the major categories. Of the six nominations, only one is for a song in which he is the main performer. The others are by Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Beyonce and Keri Hilson. So if he makes it to the stage, it’s possible that we may see some venting.

Rock Performances
Despite this being a year for pop, the rock performances are strong. Dave Matthews Band, Green Day and the Zac Brown Band will perform this year.
