When a talented couple comes together at a professional level, the dynamics of the relationship becomes interesting to explore.
The Indian music fraternity has some beautiful couples whose musical connections became kismet connections when they finally tied the knot. The two ‘M’s of music and marriage have definitely gone hand in hand for these musical pairs.
Vishal & Rekha Bhardwaj: The unconventional voice of Rekha Bhardwaj was introduced long ago in Khubsoorat in 1980, but it made headlines with director-music composer Vishal Bhardwaj’s Maqbool. And then there was no looking back. The beauty of her career is that she is not confined to her husband’s movies. In fact, she’s garnered maximum praise for her rendition of ‘Genda Phool’, composed brilliantly by A R Rahman for Delhi 6.
She admits that her distinct voice gets few opportunities, but she is happy with what she is doing. Speaking of her husband, she says: “The best part about our relationship is that we both believe in doing nothing but the best; that always works for us. Creative differences are bound to happen, but it is fun because it gives both of us an opportunity to grow as a talent.”
Rekha has many Bollywood and independent projects to showcase to her increasing audience in the near future, and that has the singer truly excited at the moment.
Roop Kumar & Sunali Rathod: Sunali, along with her better half, Roop Kumar Rathod, mesmerised many hearts with their melodious albums. Their collaboration on Bazm-e-Meer and Manpasand was loved by every music-lover.
‘Tera Faisal’ and ‘Sunn Zara’ were beautiful numbers that got them recognition. Looking at the respective careers on a broader perspective, Roop Kumar Rathod took a step ahead by getting into Bollywood. Although Sunali continued with her independent music, she does have her own reasons too for not stepping into Bollywood, where she could have done wonders.
She says, “I was so engrossed in my music that I never took any extra efforts to get into tinsel town. I do regret it, but I have never taken it to heart.”
Jagjit & Chitra Singh: How can one forget The Unforgettables, a one of its kind collection of ghazals by Jagjit and Chitra Singh? This musical pair got married in 1969 and soon created waves by becoming pioneers of modern ghazal singers in India in 1976. The duo has been blessed with melodious voices and churned out songs dipped in blissful romance.
Chitra went ahead to become a playback singer for many Bollywood numbers, and sang for movies like Aaj, Raavan, Bhawna, Arth and Avishkaar. The lyricist and music director in her saw the release of Aashiana (1969) and Aaj (1990) respectively.
It was the untimely demise of their son Vivek Singh in 1990 which came as a terrible blow; since then, Chitra went into a lifelong hibernation. And thus, another talent had to surrender to destiny.
Bhupinder & Mitali Singh: Mitali Singh hails from Bangladesh and little did she know that her association with Bhupinder Singh after landing in Mumbai would turn into marriage in 1983. Bhupinder Singh, no doubt, had already fluttered millions of hearts with the guitarist in him giving hit numbers like ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne’ and ‘Dum Maro Dum’. Mitali was no less; she got an offer to sing in Aarohi for Doordarshan.
However, her collaboration with Bhupinder gave a new dimension to her career. A winner of National Award for a Bangla film song in 1983, Mitali sang for many Bangla movies. Her singing is exemplified by a slower, deeper style of geet and ghazals with Bhupinder Singh. Her songs are full of emotions and feelings.
She stepped into Bollywood later in 1982 as an actor with Nadiya Ke Paar and soon in 1993 as a playback singer in Waqt Hamara Hai, Baazi and Lalchee. Her last tryst with Bollywood happened with Sooraj Bharjatia’s Hum Saath Saath Hain. Mitali, however, is engrossed with her solo projects and still has a sweet collaboration with hubby Bhupinder.
Kunal and Gayatri Iyer-Ganjawala: This is another successful singer jodi. Gayatri, wife of Kunal Ganjawala, has had several Bollywood movies to her credit, including Salaam Namaste, Dhoom, Masti, and the forthcoming movie Roadside Romeo. |
