Smooth Criminal: Jay Sean

- Shruti Suri
Event : Jay Sean’s India Tour
Featuring : Jay Sean
Venue : Hard Rock Cafe, Bangalore
Date : 21 August, 2011
A Sunday night in Bangalore is always exciting, but having an international singer in the city is like one giant party. The night would have been incomplete without some drunken drama on the streets! People lined up at Hard Rock Café on Sunday night to catch Jay Sean perform live!

There has always been a certain level of awe for Jay. But he looked uncomfortable kicking the gig off with ‘Dance With You’ as tickets were still being checked at the entry! We too rushed in as soon as we heard him and we hardly had a chance to allow ourselves to adjust to the darkly lit room. But Jay Sean did not seem threatened by the situation and managed to force the audience to dance.

If you like bands like Bally Sagoo and Gurdas Mann, chances are, you will like what Jay Sean has to offer. In fact, he performed ‘Down’ flawlessly, and had the audience singing along too!

The setlist was varied and stretched all the way back to the Me Against Myself days and reached right up to the new single ‘Like This, Like That.’

A fantastic sing along to the lyric “Tere bin nahin jeena,” from the song ‘Nahi Jeena’ involved massive enrolment to the chant from the crowd. Honestly speaking, there was nothing wrong with the song, but when the whole thing stuck around the same midtempo bump 'n' drudgery rhythm whilst Jay warbled about his women woes we were forced to guess that the reason some girls seem to keep leaving him is simply because he has become a little bit boring.

After a brief prologue, there was an opportunity for the audience to take a break and simply listen while Sean played couple of emotional songs called, ‘Stolen’ and ‘Dil Mera’ in a voice so syrupy that you could make a cake with it.

Throughout the evening, Jay put on a great show. The sound could have been better, but his set list highlighted his best material. Sunday, August 21st, was a glorious night to be in Bangalore. Some drunkards may not even remember, but there are many girls who will never forget. After Jay had a chance to catch his breath, he didn’t shy down from pointing at girls and screaming “I love you.”
