Belongs to the direct sisya-parampara of Thyagaraja, Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman is known to have studied under his father, Lalgudi V.R.Gopalaiyer. His is a name that one instantly associates with melody, rhythm, masterly technique in violin playing and musical excellence. One of the state musicians of Tamil Nadu, he is also an Asthana vidwan of the Tirupati Devasthanam.

When he was 12, he is said to have started his musical career as an accompanying violinist. He soon managed to grab the limelight with his rich imagination, quick grasp, an uncommon ability for adapting to the individual styles of the leading maestros in Carnatic music while accompanying them in their concerts. The rich concert experience he thus gained, coupled with the strong urge to give original expression to the musical ideas surging in him, culminated in his emergence as a solo violinist of rare brilliance. He endeared himself to music lovers by his flawless and fascinating style, graceful and original, yet not divorced from traditional roots.

In 1995 he took part in the Edinburgh music festival in 1965. surprised by the quality of his melody and masterly technique, Yehudi Menuhin, the renowned violinist, presented him with his Italian violin. He is known to have performed widely, in India and around the world.

Besides being a violinist par excellence, he is also a composer with a number of Varnams and tillanas to his name.
