Brief Biography
Originally from Kolkata, Music composer, Pritam is famous for his lively music compositions like that of Dhoom. Pritam’s passion for music may have been passed on from his father, Prabodh Chakraborty, who runs a music school for children. During his school days, he attended his father’s music classes and learnt to play the guitar.

To seek a platform for his musical capabilities, Pritam came to Mumbai. He studied sound engineering at the Film and Television Institute in Pune where he got exposed to different genres of world music. Pritam also learnt African music from musicologist Kedar Avati.

He got his much needed break when Hungarian filmmaker Isteran Gaal offered him a chance to give the background music for his film. Finally, he settled in Mumbai where he worked as a music composer for ad jingles and TV serials. He soon became friends with Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Gadhvi and Jeet, who played the guitar with singer Anup Jalota.

He got his first opportunity when Sanjay Gadhvi got the film Tere Liye. Inspite of the music doing well, the film was a flop. But soon Yash and Aditya Chopra signed on Gadhvi and the musical pair of Jeet and Pritam started being considered as the newest kids on the block.

This partnership however did not last long and they parted ways amicably. After a considerable time, Pritam signed Fun2shh - Dudes In The 10th Century, and then Agnipankh. These films did miserably at the box office and thus Pritam’s music plummeted along with it. Finally, it was Dhoom, which renewed Pritam’s career.

Pritam also gave the music for the films Life in a Metro and formed a band named Metro.

R D Burman, is Pritam’s idol, because of his great ability to give attention to the element of sound while composing music.

Pritam was actively involved in mentoring and judging new talent on Zee TV's singing competition show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009.

Pritam has been accused of plagiarism on several occasions, wherein he has copied the music for a number of his most popular Hindi film songs from various artists from around the world (especially Asia), without giving credit to the original artists themselves. In some cases he has bought the copyright and given due credit too.
