Brief Biography
Kamal Dasgupta began with the Gramophone Company of India for which he made music history, composing for such immortals as Pankaj Malik, Juthika Roy and Kanan Devi, Kalyani Das, Jagmohan and Hemant Kumar. Jawab (Aye Chand Chhup Na Jana by Kanan Devi) and Hospital (Meri Majbooryoon Nain Mera Daaman Chaak Kar Dala by Kanan Devi) were his most memorable films as music director were. Kamal Dasgupta felt unwanted in the pot independence years. He found it hard to bear the neglect he faced once his great work was done and then forgotten. He and Fayyaz Hashmi earned vast sums of money for the cinema and the record industry, not forgetting the sheer pleasure and happiness they brought to the masses, but as time passed, they were conveniently forgotten as if they had never existed. Kamal Dasgupta’s achievement is evident in "Nazrul Geet" rendered by Firoza Begum. Her unsurpassable singing on composition of Kamal was also re-conducted by others music directors. Kamal Dasgupta left Calcutta sometime in the 1960s and went to Dhaka where he converted to Islam, taking the name Kamal Islam, before marrying Feroza Begum whom he always loved.
